good evening parents my name is Rosa Aguilar and I am through here English American literature and ELC teacher at Sierra Vista High School I am not teacher however I actually started my career as a teacher at the Los Angeles Unified School District when I graduated from Mount Saint Mary's College back in 2002 at the age of 21 so this is my 18th year teaching but my third year at Sierra Vista High School and I wanted to share with you that my experience has been nothing but amazing and breathtaking I definitely hope to teach her Park Unified School District for May so I'm excited to be your son and daughter's American literature 11th grade teacher or English language development Este ano Instagram st. Mary's in Los Angeles Guatemala Fiesta Olive Middle School Boise State DC to Los Angeles to Kansas City to Los Angeles Twinkle Toes extensible mosquito CJ thank you for giving me the opportunity to start with your child as a fair teacher and I just want to say that I am with you on this train I have a sophomore in high school next year she'll be taking American literature but I feel your ear if she nice striations at times we all wish we were back in school and we know that this type of environment is not it's not it's not asking too zip to learning as it would be to be in the school setting but we're doing the best that we can get down here to support you on this journey please reach out begin my presentation with going over the grading policy what we do in the classroom and if you have any questions or concerns please reach out to me when you can on friends and conference with me anytime I know that we're running out of time with the first semester it will be over October 9th so we have 13 days if you child is having a difficult time to catch your child up to at least as the average of passing grade for the semester all right high and I'm going to continue who is part 2 of the video so now I'm vsp.com website under a Maasai glerum 304 quickly go over American literature so basically what we do is we are reading novel and we are also looking at some poems and I know for this part of the semester 2 students started off with African American perspective so they we're looking at does America provide access to American dream so we have to understand the pass in order to understand the present to answer that question so we worked at Malcolm X's perspective add poems from Langston Hughes titled let America be America again and we also read Obama's Democratic Convention and so those three would count as looking at others perspectives and then and the students were able to come up with their own I looking at current events that are happening now with the African-American community and then they moved on and looked at does America provide access to American Dream for Latino Americans and so they look at chapter 4 of always running by Luis Rodriguez which he shared his experience which is chapter 4 we read chapter 4 in. is experience attending a Unified School District High School Marshall High School and he walked us through his experience attending the high school when he and other Latin Americans did not have access to higher education courses they were just given what shop metal shop courses back in 1968 and from are we read this is not a current event for an old event that occurred in East LA walkouts that happened in Garfield High School Roosevelt High School Woodrow Wilson High School and Lincoln High School and so we look at that event where students said enough is enough and they walked out of class and demanded a higher education better classroom environments teachers who are equipped to teach students who are newcomers from other countries and so be ready. And then students looked at current events are happening now with the Latino Americans sold the DREAM Act immigration policies and so forth and they were able to look at authors perspectives and their experiences and then make up their own mind whether America provides access to the American dream for Latino America and then lastly there are looking at the the perspective of Japanese American Authors so the students read an excerpt from farewell to manzanar about Japanese-Americans were put in concentration camps in California due to the bombing of Pearl Harbor and so we read about this young ladies experience when she saw her father be taken away to a concentration camp and accused as the enemy so then after that they looked at Ed video learning more about the concentration camps and just factual information Nutra formation about it and lastly there reading a springboard essay about a hyphenated American which is in the please American perspective and after. So then they get to answer the question doesn't access to Jeff to the looking at those three ethnicities specifically and so that's would dare essays going to be based on so again you're writing constantly they are reading higher level reading that are 11th grade passages and then they have writing expectations they do practice close reading using zinc springboard and then you wanted a little bit about me it's here these are the sites that we use easybib.com we use archive.org to look at to actually check out we used to hoot use Google Classroom we go live using Google meet they do flipgrid videos for me 90-second video where I ask some questions about specific ethnic group and so to have them start to to come up with I dare own ideas right you're taking perspective of authors but now come up with your own idea and answer the question you know how does it how does it affect being here 14 years of your life and then going back to your country if you if they worked questions like that about questions about black lives matters and the whole movement that's going on right now for the African-American so a lot of Dino discussions actually getting to here kids have to say about what is going on in America right now currently they use the springboard online book where they will find all their readings and class and so they login they have to be online textbook to ebook as they call it and so here it is and so my students are currently reading it's about Japanese-Americans and solids hyphenated American really but deep into what what's so important about the highest and what is a hyphen mean and so growing up Asian in American is what we're all right banks that we use in the class zinc learning is very important in our classroom they actually just finished dashboard I guess it won't take me to it right now I'm at Atlanta teacher so the answer is no all right let me just go back here so using they do close reading their we use jamboard as well I'll put up some questions as you can see on Chambord and students go ahead and respond as you're there it's like an interactive whiteboard no red ink is where their practice or grandma or they practice claims for argumentative essays and so the kids really enjoy doing some activities on here that have to do with the text structure of an argumentative essay so that's what we do as well. Well I hope you enjoy my kind of what we do in the classroom again policy which I think is important to is in the syllabus you can actually look at the entire syllabus if you have any questions I'm sure to slip answers every question so homework is this your face ABCD sale nothing else in. It's very simple if you do have questions about specific about your child as a volunteer I don't want to take a cousin everything pops up at the bottom here and read it has my name as my school email address and my Google phone so you can actually call this number and we can actually have a conversation about your child you can call me at any time between 3 or even 2 p.m. to until 5 p.m. I appreciate it thank you so much and I hope you have a wonderful rest of your evening again part is three of my other course it's ALG 1 and 2 you can go ahead and skip this part if you just have your child enrolled in American literature go ahead and go she ran go back to my syllabus and so here is elt how much is a different class designated ELD so does English courses in in high school English language Learners continuing their journey to learn English developing language skills in Reading Writing listening and speaking alright so this is what I pretty much look at which is the Common Core State Standards that are aligned with the English language development so English language development standards are part 1 how English works and then part 2 I'm sorry part 1 learning to use English which is all collaborative work and part 2 learning how English works now some students still need part 3 which is the foundational so depending on their education levels from their home country some of the students have achievement gaps in the basic foundational skill so that's basically what we doing class do you burn any content through English so we look at science to look at math look at look at literature I'll look at Social studies but we're learning English using project so I'm a big heavy user with common core standards in diverse classrooms this is the book that I actually use for my classroom I am big on constructive conversation skills so the kids learn to create ideas ideas for defy ideas and negotiate ideas in the elt show me how to get the best high school I got you from Mount Saint Mary's 17 years of teaching on Central American Guatemalan the Salvadorian bibliophile most recent books Shredder becoming an ask again yes my daughter's name is bliss these are the sites that we use for my classroom and so I am going to move on to classroom expectations Desert Edge we are on WebEx actually we don't use WebEx I just use Google meet since our school is transitioning to Google meets so just might as well use it now be on time to class I'm waiting keep your video on that would be nice a lot of students don't like to show their face I know that it's a private and are Matt and sometimes were scared to let others in and sometimes I know that there's like three students taking a course and so there's not enough room in the house so it's okay if they have it off it's nice to see some faces mute your mic only speak when you are addressed a question and if you have a question there's always the chat to use the students have a question I'll make sure your internet's working properly and yes some students get kicked out I even get kicked out sometimes I don't know why and then we just like back again so the kids know that if my Wi-Fi goes down for some reason. I'm able to log back in but they just have to be patient away from me participation is important try your best all the time that my students are learning English sign up in English it's your mama's so I want them to practice English without peer pressure without getting made fun of because we all have heavy Accents in the classroom and so ELD is the play to kind of let go let loose and just sit in a quiet place is nice but sometimes we all don't have that Advantage so it is what it is we're working through it and be respectful you know especially an ELD classes the kids are always together especially if they're like 30 or elt students they know each other very well and so are you know don't be like Stein and you know they'll be like hey how are you how's it going they just they just have a tight tight group and so at times they can get a little bit out of hand you know when I got me but they're never disrespectful. totally respect each other pay attention focus in class I have some students that I know. Just log in and leave the area and when it's time for class because miss their am I a they're missing in action I don't know where they are are they sisters Los alumnos Brendan la la la computadora if Dad Mustang so that's a little annoying so you know just I know we it is what it is again and it's saying that okay so again I'm going to go into Google classroom so 4 ELD it's it's a lot of group or but IELTS much of a hole and but it has in in in to see honesty for dentist so if you notice your there's breakout session so like I said a song in breakout sessions my groups here so the kids actually go they rotate to different Google Obsession so I'll be covering something and Miss Perez will be covering other material pretty well and Nicholas well so we break out that's the way we work in this classroom so we do things together but then after we going to the breakout sessions and fill the students work on different task they this one we haven't done this is this week which is due on Friday but they do great scenes in the classroom which is very difficult for them but we get through it there's always support in the classroom so also Flex Friday Extended Learning Time social emotional is tied in with this class so there's as you can see we do a lot in the classroom okay so this is what are now one unit lessons for learning about superstitions for learning about narratives character dialog vs. dialogue settings text structure lesson that's pretty much I think to cover Google Classroom material and just again you know you're grading policy is the same key stuck on 100. how much do you have questions about homework homework is very minimal because it's a lot of screen time and I want to make sure our kids eyes aren't being exposed to Too Much screen because it does cause headaches it does make it drowsy tired it's too much on the ice no alarm omnicef okay so see you make giving me information is down here read it has my name my school and my Google phone number I also have office hours them in thing what I feel fiscina but I know Saloon material material is Nicolas De Anza Auto San Antonio acostaba con Rojo Jamar I said new middle Google did all those are sinkholes in Escuela anything I'm wearing on you instead TMNT stay me no speaky mentalmente socialmente Yes Federal que no supporting most analogous in which address is Wellness no chest
