Sierra Vista High School Teacher Ms. Lomeli Named SGV ROP Teacher of the Year

For Lomeli, the recognition carries special meaning. A proud Sierra Vista High School graduate from the Class of 1995, she returned to her alma mater as an educator and has spent nearly 17 years teaching and mentoring the next generation of students on the same campus she once attended.

“I was honestly surprised and very emotional,” Lomeli said of receiving the honor. “I felt extremely grateful and honored to receive the recognition. It was a special moment because I truly love what I do and the students I work with.”

Lomeli has worked in education for approximately 26 years, driven by a passion for supporting children and families. She attended Citrus College, Pacific Oaks College and Cal State Fullerton, building on her education and professional experience to develop an approach to teaching centered on hands-on learning, mentorship, and student growth.

At Sierra Vista, Lomeli teaches the Child Development Pathway, a college- and career-focused program that introduces students to opportunities in education, child development and related fields. Students gain hands-on experience working with children while developing communication, leadership, teamwork, responsibility, and other professional skills.

“My goal is for students to leave the program better prepared for college, the workforce and whatever career path they choose,” Lomeli said.

Beyond preparing students with technical and professional skills, Lomeli said she hopes they leave her classroom with greater confidence, independence and belief in their own potential.

“What I enjoy most is watching my students grow, both academically and personally,” Lomeli said. “I love seeing them gain confidence, discover their strengths, and begin to see possibilities for their future.”

That impact often extends beyond graduation. Lomeli said some of the most rewarding moments of her career come when former students return to share their accomplishments, whether they have continued their education, entered the workforce or pursued a career that inspires them.

She also encourages current students to view high school as a time for exploration rather than feeling pressure to have their futures completely mapped out.

“This is the time to explore different careers, gain experience, ask questions, and discover what they are passionate about,” Lomeli said. “I also encourage them to keep their options open and never limit what they believe they can accomplish.”

Looking ahead, Lomeli hopes to continue expanding the Child Development Pathway by providing additional hands-on experiences and strengthening connections with colleges and community partners to help students successfully transition into their next chapter.

Lomeli credits her family, colleagues, administrators, mentors and students with supporting and inspiring her throughout her career. For her, the SGV ROP Teacher of the Year recognition ultimately reflects the work and relationships built over decades in education.

“This recognition represents many years of working alongside amazing students and educators,” Lomeli said. “I always say, ‘My success is seeing my students succeed,’ and that is what continues to motivate me every day.”
